Methi Matar Malai By Chef Jigss

Today’s recipe of Methi Matar Malai (white gravy) is a very popular North Indian recipe made with fresh fenugreek leaves (methi leaves), green peas, cream, cashews and spices.  It is very flavorful and aromatic dish with creamy, smooth and delicious gravy. Methi Matar Malai is found in the menu of most North-Indian restaurants.

In this version which will prove to be very easy to cook at home, the gravy will be whitish in color &  is a sure shot winner recipe. its creamy, mildly sweet with spicy aroma, smooth, delicious and of course healthy too with the methi/fenugreek and peas. This will turn out to be so good & I am sure it will even beat the  methi matar malai served in restaurants. Not to mention that recipe is good for kids too, especially if you want to feed them fenugreek/methi as there is no bitterness or bitter taste but is simply irresistible …..





  • Onion – 1 medium size ( finely chopped)
  • Ginger-garlic 3-4 cloves + Green chillies 4-5 (or as needed) – grinded into paste
  • Fenugreek leaves/methi leaves – ¾  cup (finely chopped)
  • Green peas -1 cup (boiled)
  • Milk – 1- 1 ½ cup
  • Panneer (cottage cheese) –  200gms (finely grated)
  • Cashewnuts  – ½ cup (powdered)
  • Cinnamon -1 inch piece (optional)
  • Cloves -2-3 pcs
  • Cardamom – ¼  tsp (powder)
  • Jeera/cumin seeds – 1 tsp
  • Oil or butter  – 1-2 tbsp
  • Sugar 1 tsp ( for taste)
  • Salt to taste


Prep time:  10-15 mins (including cleaning methi leaves)
Cooking time: 15- 20 mins
Serves: 3-4





Heat oil in a pan,  add Jeera and let it crackel



Now add onions and toss till they are translucent



Add Fenugreek leaves/methi leaves , mix well and cook for 2-3 mins (gets translucent)

Keep this mixture aside




Now in another vessel/pan  add (oil/butter optional), cashew powder, ginger+garlic+green-chilly paste, clove & cinnamon (optional)



& pour on milk ,  mix well and cook till comes to boil.



Now add grated  panneer  mix well and cook for 2-3 mins (till comes to boil). stir occasionally




Add  Sugar , salt


cardamom powder & mix well

(if gravy becomes too thick , you may add more milk)



Now add green-peas mix well and cook for 1-2 mins



Now  add the Fenugreek leaves/methi leaves + onion mixture prepared earlier .



mix well and cook for  2-3 mins



Cover the lid and let it simmer on low flame for 2-3 mins



Delicious Methi Mutter Malai is ready to serve



Garnish with Cashew pcs, serve hot with butter nan, roti, chappati etc.
